The process of editing the templates is very easy. Each template includes two PSD files, one for the front and one for the back. Digital is great

Ask any digital photographer what they like most about recording in pixels, as opposed to emulsion, and we’ll invariably talk about how we love the immediacy of the digital format. We are creatures who enjoy the instant gratification of being able to see results without waiting. Yes, digital offers us the ability to check composition and exposure in the field, making adjustments to ensure that we capture the very best possible image in the camera.

And then there’s the volume. Gone are the days of carefully counting down from 36 to zero as the film slipped through the camera. We’ve almost forgotten the alarming feel of a film winder that wouldn’t progress, having reached the final fram on a 36-exposure roll of film.

We have so much more flexibility now, so much more control. We even have Histograms!

However, all that flexibility and control comes at a price. We are shooting more images. Many, many more, according to research. It’s not unusual for a photographer’s digital archive to contain tens or even hundreds of thousands of image files. Those images all have to be managed, archived and stored. And that’s where the nightmare often begins.

Managing a library of digital images can be a tiresome and challenging chore. We don’t tend to employ a consistent approach, which leaves us with images files in various locations. When the need arises, we buy external storage devices and then we have to move files around, which as anyone who has ever tried can testify, can be a confusing and potentially exasperating business.

Worse still, we don’t employ a consistent approach to backing-up our image libraries and the potential for disaster grows. Our images are precious. We spend a great deal of time and effort capturing them, investing in the best gear and learning clever techniques. But we don;t often invest the time to create a sensible, easily-managed workflow and the results of our labours can be at risk.

If only there were some kind of workflow process, which we could employ to make the job easier. What we need is a strategy, a procedure which will reduce the amount of time we spend in digital post-production whilst also ensuring that we adopt a consistent approach. Then we would be able to find the photos from Aunt Nellie’s birthday without searching through hundreds of folders. And, better still, our valuable data would be safe and securely backed-up.
